II - "Don't Pick Me Up"

Don't pick me up
Don't dust me off
Stranded in sheets once sought

In your tee-shirt
And my socks
I cannot move from this spot

Don't pick me up
Don't dust me off
Don't lie to me with "better off"

Abide a while
Alone in the darkness
Of this empty room
Where love was made
But not made to last

Don't pick me up
Don't dust me off
Don't lie to me with "better off"

I - "False Pretense"

Standing in the school yard
of all the knowledge I've yet to learn
lessons in my desires
still to me...
unknown

I view elegant hues
up against you
green, like my years
yet on you it captivates my stares

Dreaming of a complicated embrace
one that would cause such disgrace
your lips touch my lips
of a lesser grace

Hidden in you
kiss after kiss
searching for wisdom
in a forest untrodden
enchanted by sins
you thought you'd forgotten

Tumbling into a brokenness
too hard to define
unraveling inside
like weathered vine
the tempo of our bodies
pseudo divine

My mind twisted in a lustful existence
given to the wants of fruits forbidden
hanging by a thread of distance
weak and holding little resistance
my secret still hidden
in a false pretense

IV - "Don't Hurry"

Don't hurry, baby
Baby, don't hurry
It can't end
If it never begins

Don't hurry, baby
Baby, don't hurry
You can live with the fantasy
Nobody gets hurt in the end

The touch and the tease
Your hand on my knee
Careful, baby
looks like danger to me

The air from the lungs
That cat's on my tongue
I can't look innocent
With scandal on my mind

Don't hurry, baby
Baby, don't hurry
Idolize each other
We'll only screw our minds

Don't hurry, baby
Baby, don't hurry
Do your best to withstand me
That's all I hope to find

Don't hurry, baby
Baby, don't hurry
We've got to slow it down
Just in time

Always in time

The Limb Still Holds...

It’s been said, that “you don’t know what you have until it’s gone.”  Might I add, you also don’t appreciate what you have until you’re grasping for it.  It’s like reaching out for a fragile twig, hanging by the mountain side, from which you’ve just jumped, full force and willfully.  Somehow, it seemed like a good idea at the time.  Right up until logic sets in and you realize hitting bottom is going to hurt and there is nothing to break your fall.

But on the way down you enjoy the rush; you experience the feel of the wind on your face, like it’s never been felt before.  You had the guts to take the leap, and on the verge of disaster, for a moment, you’re somehow more alive than you’ve ever been.  At the last moment logic sets in.  You’re falling, fast.  So you grasp for anything you can, hoping it’s not too late, to undo.  You grasp for a limb.  It may not catch you at this point.  It may only slow your fall from grace, but it’s your only chance.  You take the limb.

You’ve been teased by a thrill you know you can never, will never, feel again.  Probability was on your side this time, in only a way that Pascal himself could wager.  While your risks have always been calculated, this time you miscalculated.  The margin of error is great.

I’m hanging on a limb.  On one side of a closed door, I fear for what could be lost.  When the door opens, pushing air against my face, reminiscent, like the plunge from the mountain, memories flood.  In one room, there exist many hues of emotion.  Open or shut, that door is still the same, my want intertwined with my fear.

Yet, what I fear the most is failure, mediocrity and lack of achievement.  So, I’m glued to my reason, pasted to my logic, and while at times, the adhesive wears, allowing myself to tear away from all that matters most, it’s not long before I realize that the glue is part of who I am.  The adhesive is essential.  Without it, I’m like loose papers caught in the wind. While mildly entertaining for a moment, the papers blow, just out of reach, until a vexed state sets in.  You give up; you let the paper blow away.  You hold to what you know.    .

The Sway of Love...

I’m responsible.  They are entrusted to me. They suffer from my failures and thrive under my firm and decisive management.  While I don’t determine their bottom line, I greatly affect it.  They experience the ramifications of my actions, and at times, my lack of action.

As I sit on this swing today, I face the West, and I watch them.  As the sun lowers, symbolically announcing the close of day,  it illuminates my children in a new light.  As my son cups the earth in his hand and gravity pulls the sand through his fingers, my daughter dangles, dangerously high and handless, on a bar.  My motherly instincts wants to send a “don’t fall” to my daughter and a “watch for sharp objects” to my son, but today I am silent, still.  I gamble on them being “o.k.” on their own.

As I observe them from a distance, it the picture perfect end to a typical summer day in America.  Our hair smells of chlorine, slightly curly and touted by humidity.  Our skin is slightly darker than when we started our morning. Our love is one day stronger.  Our life’s one day closer to completion.  Yet, on this seemingly insignificant day, I experience a whole new significance.

I am alone on this bench swing for two.

I could call a girlfriend to come over for company and good conversation, but it’s much to late and I’m much too exhausted to converse, and every morning 5 a.m. seems to come earlier than the one before.  Truth be told, I don’t really want to talk.  I want to write.  Writing, the only facet of my life where emotions flow fluidly, out of what is normally an emotionless void.

The male species is out of question.  One, I would not subject my child to someone with whom I am only vaguely familiar.  Two, a casual thrill has never really been my thing.  Three, I wouldn’t even know what I’m looking for.

So I sit, alone.

Alone is a state I’m not sure I want to be in.  It seems unnatural.  Like I’m rebelling against the natural order of life.  Yet, at the same time, I can’t stand seem to move from the sway of the swing. A timed, rhythmic mediation that gives me the comfort of consistence.  A vast contrast to the land of love, which is uncertain, chaotic, without rhythm.

I wonder how long I’ll sit alone.  I’m not unhappy, perhaps indifferent, certainly blessed.  To love and be in love is a primal need.  So I guess it’s nothing out of the ordinary to want to feel that spark, the butterflies, to look at someone and know that they are just as absorbed in you as you are in them, captivated in a moment.

But for now, the effort to exhausting, the price too high, the thrill, more than my battered heart dares to endure.  I’d rather sway in rhythm in my aloneness than ride the highs and lows of love.  It’s a difficult but peaceful season.

For now, I’m going to sit.
